Labour If re-elected, Labour would push ahead with its identity card scheme. The police would be given extra money. Every community would have a dedicated neighbourhood policing team by 2010. 25,000 community support officers would be employed by 2008. New powers would be introduced to deal with anti-social behaviour and alcohol related violence.
Conservatives All Chief Constables would be directly accountable to new directly elected commissioners. 5,000 extra police officers would be appointed each year.  Targets would be scrapped and paper work would be reduced. Early release schemes for prisoners would be ended. Householders would be given more freedom to use forceful acts to defend their homes. 20,000 more prison spaces would be created.
Liberal Democrats The whole plan for identity cards would be ended. The money saved doing this would be used to employ an extra 10,000 police officers. Modern technology would be used to free up police officers so that they could spend more time on the streets. ASBO's would be enhanced with ASBO Plus. A new Justice Department would be created to oversee the work of courts and sentences set.
