Labour Labour would press ahead with it restructuring plans for the army. Battalions would be reduced by four with some historic regiments being abolished. The party's desire is for the armed services to be fully modernised to deal with the new threats of the 21st Century.
Conservatives The Conservatives would spend £2.7 billion extra on more frontline defence. The historic regiments being lined up for abolition under Labour, would be saved under the Conservatives.  
Liberal Democrats The Liberal Democrats would to stop the abolition of historic regiments in the Army but it agrees with Labour on the need to modernise the military so that it can cope with issues of the 21st Century. The party also wants greater co-ordination of capability with NATO and European allies.
