| Health is bound to be one
of the more important areas of the 2005
election campaign. The issues of MRSA and waiting lists remain contentious
and the government will be held to account for previous promises.
| Labour |
Labour
plan to promote choice by improving the information about services that
is available. They wish to reduce the waiting time to a maximum of 18
weeks from the point at which a patient goes to a GP to an operation.
Labour wish to expand the number of foundation hospitals - if these
perform well, they will be given greater financial and management
independence. Labour plan to increase spending on health to £34 billion
by 2010. |
| Conservatives |
Fighting
MRSA in hospitals will be given top priority. 'Private providers' would
have the right to supply NHS care. Patients would be given a right to
select any hospital that could operate to NHS standards and NHS costs.
If a private operation cost more, the NHS would pay 50% to compensate
the patient for freeing up NHS capacity. Centrally-imposed targets would
be scrapped. |
| Liberal
Democrats |
The
Liberal Democrats would introduce the quickest route to an operation,
via either the NHS or private health care, once a GP has decided that a
patient is both seriously ill and in need of an operation. the
elderly would receive free personal care. Free eye and dental care would
be introduced and fewer people would pay prescription charges. Fighting
MRSA would be a priority. |
