Labour Labour want a better use of Britain's current road structure rather than promise a massive road building scheme. Labour would consider the building of more toll roads and the introduction of 'high occupancy' lanes on motorways etc. The rail industry would be put under more ministerial control.
Conservatives The Conservatives would encourage more private investment in transport. Good train operators would receive longer contracts. Tax cuts for cars with low carbon emissions would be introduced.
Liberal Democrats There would be encouragement for the use of low polluting cars. There would be a shift from money being spent on road building to money being spent on the rail network. Air passenger duty would be scrapped.
