| The May 2007 election for the Welsh Assembly was based on proportional representation and not FPTP. As widely predicted, there was a protest vote against Labour with Plaid Cymru (PC) seemingly gaining from this. As with the Scottish election, there was no overall winner in that no party got the necessary number of seats to form a majority government.
Labour: 26 Assembly Members (AM’s); Constituency 24; Region 2
Plaid Cymru: 15 AM’s; Constituency 7; Region 8
Conservatives: 12 AM’s; Constituency 5; Region 7
Lib Dems: 6 AM’s; Constituency 3; Region 3
Others: 1 AM’s; Constituency 1; Region 0
Compared to the last election:
Labour: lost 4 seats.
Plaid Cymru: gained 3 seats more
Conservatives: gained 1 seat more
Lib Dems: same
Others: same
Though Labour is the largest party, they do not have enough seats to form a majority government. Horse-trading with the Liberal Democrats would gain them this majority but at what cost? What will the Liberal Democrats require for this support?
