| The Thompson sub-machine was issued to some units of the Home Guard during World War Two. The Thompson sub-machine gun fired a .45 inch bullet and weighed in at 10 lb. It had a theoretical maximum rate of fire of 900 rounds a minute but this was limited by the amount of bullets each type of magazine took and the speed with which a magazine could be changed. One type of magazine was the box type which held 40 rounds of ammunition. The other was the drum that held 50 rounds of ammunition. The Thompson sub-machine gun fired either single rounds or automatic bursts and it had a maximum range of 550 metres.
