Percentage support for the Scottish National Party 1929 to 1979

The Scottish National Party got 0.2% of the Scottish electorate in 1929 election – the first general election the Scottish National Party contended. By 1979 election, this had grown to 17.3% of all votes cast in Scotland. However, the party’s representation in the House of Commons that this led to did not match the party’s total vote in Scotland – the result of the way ‘First-Past-The-Post’ works. Under proportional representation, the Scottish National Party  has gained far greater representation in the Scottish Parliament.
