Children in coal mines in the Nineteenth Century
Children in coal mines in the Nineteenth Century For this work you will be studying primary source evidence. This is evidence that comes from the time you are studying and it is frequently used by historians. The sources you will be reading come from the Nineteenth Century and they form part of a Parliamentary enquiry into the use of children in coal mines. The evidence comes from the report produced after the Ashley Mines Commission. Each piece of evidence is numbered. You will be studying sources 116, 14, 26 and 72 to start with. Make a note of these. Look at the age of the girls who are giving evidence. Read about the experiences they had at such young ages. Some of the words used may be difficult as they are "Olde" English. You should be able to work them out - or ask your teacher. Your task : Once you have read the sources, write an account of what the life of a child might have been like in coal mines. You can either write this as a factual account or as a story like "I have to get up at 5.00 in the morning and ............".
