The 1918 Representation of the People Act gave women over 30 years of age and with property qualifications the right to vote. As women could vote, they also had a right to stand for elections. Within the Conservative Party, this started out as 1 candidate in 1918 but had only increased to 31 in the 1979 election. Male candidates completely outnumbered female candidates.
