The Independent Labour Party gained votes in the 1895 election. But the newly named Labour Party first stood in 1900 and as the years progressed usually gained votes at the expense of the Liberal Party.

1931: 6,649,630 votes. This excludes National Labour – 341,370 votes.

 

1935: 8,325,491 votes. This excludes National Labour – 339,811votes.

1951: 13,948,883 votes

 

1955: 12,405,254 votes

 

1959: 12,216,172 votes

 

1964: 12,205,808 votes
