Aces were seen as the heroes of the Royal Air Force – especially those pilots who attained ace status during the Battle of Britain. While few would argue that the aces deserved the fame they acquired, some of the unsung heroes of the Battle of Britain were the teams on the ground that kept the Hurricanes and Spitfires airworthy so that the Luftwaffe could be taken on by those who were strove to become aces. It was the higher scoring aces that became schoolboy heroes during the Battle of Britain. The figures below for kills and shared are from July 1st 1940 to October 31st 1940 and include where necessary, where a pilot was in more than one squadron.
